Posted on November 3, 2022 by markstein

Our projects for The Farrell and Cohn Plastic Surgery won awards in the 2022 ABC Alabama Chapter – Excellence in Construction Competition. Our projects were chosen from more than 80 submissions to ABC’s competition, the construction industry’s premier annual awards program.

“It’s always an honor to have our projects be recognized by our industry with awards like this. It’s an unnecessary but welcomed bonus to be able to work on such unique projects with such great clients, architects, and team members.” – Cory Varden, Project Manager

The Farrell

Our project for The Farrell, won the Second Place (Merit Award) in the Renovation Less Than 4M category. Rives completed a 6,900 square foot renovation of the premier event venue in the heart of Homewood, Alabama. The owners wanted a beautiful open event space that could host weddings, receptions, networking events, etc.

“We were honored to be a small part of the team that was involved on helping bring the owners vision of The Farrell to life.” – Chris Rives, Project Manager

Our work began with interior and exterior demolition, making room for new custom steel windows and entrances. Roughly two-thirds of the south side of the building was reconstructed, working in close coordination with Darren Hardman Studios to make sure all windows and doors fit when they arrived onsite. Additionally, we created a stucco and limestone entry surrounded by a bluestone paver sidewalk and custom louvered wood shutters. Custom leather-wrapped pivot doors were installed next to the one-way windows in the back of the space. We also added a catering kitchen with state-of-the-art equipment.

The new courtyard, inspired by Bottega Restaurant, features crushed pea gravel with bluestone pavers, a clean and thoughtful landscaped perimeter, a wall fountain, custom arched entry gate doors and a state-of-the-art sound system.

The project result is an elegant, modern event space to be used by the community for years to come.
“Years of planning and hard work went into transforming this old office building into one of the most unique and beautiful event spaces in the city.” – Chris Rives

Cohn Plastic Surgery

Our project for Cohn Plastic Surgery won the Second Place (Merit Award) in the Healthcare 4M-10M category. As the general contractor, Rives Construction completed a 10,000 square foot new construction of the office building located in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. The project was modeled after Alys Beach, a luxury beach community on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The size of the project was challenging, requiring multiple retaining walls and the construction of a bridge over a protected water way. Additionally, we dealt with unsuitable soils. To combat this issue, we over excavated the entire parking lot and built it up with geo fabric and large gravel. We topped that off with permeable pavers to allow for adequate drainage in the area.

We worked through supply chain issues for the job’s duration, whether it was with floor tile coming from overseas, light fixtures or plumbing fixtures. Rives also worked with the design team to keep the project within budget while still preserving the original design intent.

The result is a beautiful space with an upscale residential feel and high-end finishes throughout the interior.

“It’s a privilege to work alongside the best in the industry. Awards like this give recognition to what we get to experience every day at Rives, an excellent team that produces extraordinary results.” – Cory Varden
