ABC of Alabama awarded Rives two Excellence in Construction Awards. Total Dermatology received the Obelisk Award (1st Place) in the Healthcare $5-10 million category, and Baker Donelson received the Merit Award (2nd Place) in the Commercial Construction $5-10 million category.

Total Dermatology

The Rives team renovated an existing office space in the historic Woodward Building on 1st Avenue in downtown Birmingham for Total Dermatology. The project encompassed approximately 30,000 square feet spread across four floors, and it includes exam rooms, doctors’ offices, procedure rooms, conference rooms, research rooms, and reception/waiting areas for the high-end dermatology practice.

There was extensive preconstruction work to develop this truly unique medical office. The project involved a shut down and relocation of Total Dermatology’s main existing office to multiple floors of the Woodward Building under an accelerated schedule to meet the required move-in date.

There was significant coordination required to make Total Dermatology’s modern space fit in a historic building. Floor leveling and elevation changes required close scrutiny and extensive work. To accommodate the new space, Rives installed a state-of-the-art mechanical system that integrates with the older building core system. The entire project is a modular Falk wall system which warrants significant dimensional as well electrical and plumbing coordination.  This space is truly one of a kind thanks to the forward-thinking mentality of both the design team and Total Dermatology.

Baker Donelson

Rives demoed two floors of the 1901 Sixth Avenue Building in downtown Birmingham and completed a buildout of Class A office space for national law firm Baker Donelson. Baker Donelson’s goal was an office space that accommodates today’s hybrid work culture while also providing an exceptional client experience. Their new space includes a client floor for welcoming guests, attorney offices and support space, a conference suite, multi-purpose rooms, collaborative areas, a lounge, and a café complete with a catering kitchen.

The project required extensive preconstruction work and value engineering efforts to provide a high-end space that met both Baker Donelson’s needs and budget. The project also had an accelerated schedule to meet their required move-in date. The 36,000-square-foot full demo and buildout on two floors of the 1901 Sixth Avenue Building was completed in just six months.

With some of the most high-end finishes and details in many aspects of the space, the Rives team worked diligently to maintain quality while also sustaining the schedule. The project also necessitated extensive planning and work to overcome significant floor levelness issues that offered a unique challenge.

Baker Donelson’s space involved a complete revamp of an existing feature stair that connects the two floors. Other features of the buildout include a high-end Teknion furniture wall system throughout the conference room, lounges, and office fronts as well several unique ceiling systems in key spaces.

The excellent partnership between Rives, KPS, and Baker Donelson allowed the firm to move into this one-of-a-kind space on time and within budget.
